India is fast becoming one of the most popular destinations of water sports. Though many of these sports are just for the brave hearts, scuba diving is one activity that can be enjoyed by all, even those who prefer to laze around on a beach. Of late, scuba diving has become one of the preferred activities not just for foreign tourists but Indians as well. Though there are many beaches in India, not all are suited for scuba diving. Apart from the variety of marine species and clean water, there also has to be all facilities, equipment and expert guides available to make a place suitable for scuba diving.

Here are the best 5 places in India where you can enjoy a thrilling scuba diving experience.

1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands

When it comes to water-based activities, particularly scuba diving, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the go-to destination to experience the ultimate underwater. The clear, turquoise water, the amazing variety of marine species, a splendid collection of coral reefs and the facilities available make the Islands just a perfect destination for scuba diving enthusiasts. Another advantage is that there are many places ideal to go diving. Some of the best places are the Havelock Island, the Cinque Island, Fish Rock, Corbyn’s Cove Beach and Corruption Rock.  You can spot many unique species such as eagle rays, unicorn fish, giant napoleons, reef sharks and even dolphins at the Corruption Rock.

With many places in Lakshadweep offering exotic scuba diving locations, it is one of the most preferred destinations for scuba diving for tourists. Agatti Islands, Kadmat Island and Bangaram beach are the most popular spots. Agatti is where you can spot a variety of coral reefs while at Bangaram, you can be around exotic marine species. With such a massive presence of marine flora and fauna and crystal clear water, Lakshadweep Islands offer an amazing scuba diving experience.

3. Pondicherry

This beautiful place located on the coast of Bay of Bengal not only offers a visual treat to the eyes but it also provides scuba diving enthusiasts moments to cherish forever.  Just from a depth of 5m to 40 m, the water of Pondicherry can be explored not only by experienced scuba divers but also beginners. You will not only find different fish species but the coral reefs in different colours will give you a visual treat. There is also an artificial reef, Temple Reef, which even has shipwreck ruins for divers to explore. Other great sites are Cool shark reef, 4 Corners, Aravind’s Wall, the Hole, among others.  If you are at the right place and are lucky, you will get to pass by exotic marine species such as Tiger Fish, Moray eels, parrot fish, different rays and so on.

While not diving related, you shouldn't miss the chance to visit the not so far away inspiring community of Auroville.

4. Goa

How can we forget the land of beaches, Goa? Being one of the best beach destinations of the country, Goa offers the perfect heart pumping water sport activities. Though you will spot tourists just lazing around Goa beaches at any given time, there are also a number of visitors who might be underwater as Goa is one of the most popular destinations for scuba diving and other water based fun activities. Apart from Grand Island which is known as the Diver’s paradise, there are also many other diving locations such as Davy Jones, Turbo Tunnel, Uma Guma Reef among others.

5. Kerala

With picturesque beaches lined by lush coconut trees, Kerala has always been a popular tourist destination but it is also fast becoming one of the sought-after destinations in India for scuba diving. The best-known diving sites in Kerala are Cochin and the Varkala beach.  

Other places for scuba diving in India are Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The best thing about scuba diving is that apart from the beautiful locations that offer a soul-satisfying experience, you can also see the diversity that India is famous for in its marine life as well.
